Last month I was working evenings so I got to be home during the day, for a change. My 5 year old niece was watching Sesame Street (PBS remember) when I overheard a skit entitled “Desperate Houseplants”. It featured neglected houseplants not getting “what they needed.” Then, the Gardener appears and all the plants swoon. “He really knows what I need!” exclaims one of the plants. The moral of the story being, I think, that plants need water…really bad.
Was this really necessary? Are the writers running out of ideas? Are they trying to appeal to the adults watching? The typical preschooler probably doesn’t make the link between their educational programming and the ABC Primetime drama with adult content, but still. This is a show made possible by “viewers like you”, not to mention your tax dollars. Should we expect better?
Gross! I can’t take that show any more now that it is wall-to-wall Elmo. His voice gives me headaches. Good to know I’m not missing much by not watching it.
I thought the Desperate Houseplants sketch was hilarious. And Sesame Street has always been known for its ability to entertain grown-ups as well as kids.
