I’m usually not overly pessimistic. I like to stay away from doom and gloom attitudes. But the news coming from the UK is not reassuring. I posted earlier about England’s woefully ignorance to their own history. It seems British education is sinking lower still. Apparently, swearing is now acceptable on written exams. Provided spelling and grammar are correct. Also, to not damage the delicate egos of young children, they’ve outlawed competitive soccer leagues. Now they’re all winners! Although being a winner now means nothing.
I’m just getting started. Baby better eat all your ethnic foods, or you’re a RACIST! You have to read it the believe it, but be careful. If you disagree…you’re a RACIST!
Law and order, not from the bobbies in jolly old England. They’re too busy arresting citizens for defending their property from attack. Then there’s the story of the man who stopped a robbery in progress. The crook was given a harsh warning but the courageous man was charged with assault. I wish I could say these were isolated events, until the law ‘enforcers’ made it publicly clear that they think thieves shouldn’t go to jail at all.
The British authorities seem to be doing everything in their power to appease the radical Islamists in their own country, despite that fact that they’re fighting these same extremists in Afghanistan. The top religious and judicial officials have already willingly accepted Islamic fundamentalist Sharia law in marital and financial affairs, without even a fight. Those great bobbies we mentioned earlier are warning Christians to stay out of “Muslim” neighborhoods. Then, one public school punished two boys for not participating in an Islamic prayer. Finally, in sheer lunacy, the radical Muslim community is outraged by an offensive advertisement of a cute little puppy, run by a local police station. I am not making this up. And they pulled the ad and begged for forgiveness.
Again, I don’t want to jump to any conclusions (even with a mat), but all this comes in a very short period of time, most of them within the last week. I can only wonder whether that distant sound I hear is the once proud British people being flushed down the toilet or Winston Churchill spinning in his grave.
My thanks to Rachel Lucas, John Hawkins, and Van Helsing.
We frequently think we hear Matt’s British grandmother spinning in her grave over things like this. We’re not much better, at least the we of Seattle; see Bull Moose’s post about Critical Mass beating up a motorist because he dared use the road while they protested. The nerve!
But the big difference is that the Seattle cops actually arrested the cyclists NOT the driver who was assaulted. The cops in England aren’t even pretending to do their job.
Re: “I posted earlier about England’s woefully ignorance to their own history.”
One wonders what they are teaching the kids over there.
Recently, I actually witnessed an argument where a Brit was telling an American, in all seriousness that if it were not for Great Britain, Americans would be speaking german right now.
LOL
It’s not just in Great Britain; it’s the entire western civilization. I wish I could be more positive, but LA wants to decide what people should eat; Chicago wants to sterilize all animals; Obama wants me to drive with inflated tires; it just gets worse. Oh crap now I’m really depressed.
I am a Londoner with American children. I’ve lived in Houston and New Jersey and am quite widely travelled in the US. These points occur to me:
1. Americans like John Hawkins, cited above, get their image of the UK from British newspapers especially The Daily Mail. In parenthesis I note how ignorant many Americans are about America itself. Hawkins has only just visited NYC for the first time and was blown away. What is it, a 2 hour flight from NC ? My wife, a New Yorker, had a media-fed image of Houston as a dump, before I took her there and she was blown away. End parenthesis. The image of the UK does warn of an obnoxious trend, but it’s far from pervasive, widely scorned, widely resisted and ridiculed. The British press is more muscular, more scurrilous, more interesting and less pc than the local monopolies which pass for newspapers here in the States. Bottom line, you’re getting false image of the whole. Your situation in the US is far more dangerous. Obama is a very very bad joke. He will pass, but the fact that maybe a majority of Americans want this sophomoric bullshitter for President says something upsetting about Americans.
2. My kids have dual nationality, so here’s hoping one of our countries gets its virtue back.
3. The socialization of Fannie and Freddie’s losses….a trillion here, a trillion there, pretty soon you’re talking real money….may trigger a loss of confidence in the “full faith and credit” of the USA. You guys have been loading up your children and grandchildren with the cost of today’s social programs….like Cronos eating his children. I fear more for the US than the UK…we’re less insular and used to adaption.
4. Altho you probably see our Moslem population as a poison pill, the best outcome would be an Anglosphere Economic Union and military alliance. That may not work soon, what with the reconquista and all.
For the past several years, I have been collecting news reports from dozens of sources, all of which relate to the decline of British society. It has certainly not been hard to find such stories. From areas like law, language, social mores, crime and police, and many more, the pattern of slippage and out of control decline is obvious. It’s wrong to dismiss these stories as an effect of British tabloids.
The title for my eventual book is:” In The Toilet: The History Of British Society In The Late 20th Century”.
In toto, the story is actually shocking, and should be required reading for socialists and multi-culturalists here.
houston, aka cancer capital of the u.s., is in fact a dump, and yes i have been there. if things are so peachy in the u.k. then why do over half the native born population want to leave? the root problem of the u.k. — and western europe – is they chose socialism over freedom. now they get to live with the consequences, including unchecked immigration from hostile countries. sucks to be them but this is what the people of europe want so far be it from me to get upset as they sink into oblivion.
Mark,
Thanks for your comments. I’m not anti-UK (I’m 3/4 English myself), but the number and scope of the reports last month led me to post my opinions. I admire your optimism and wish Britain the best of luck, they need did it now.
1) In my defense, I’ve seen several blogs with similar stories, not just John’s. Also I’ve linked to stories from the Telegraph, This Is London, and Fox News, not just the Daily Mail. Having said that, I don’t live in the UK. If you, or any other commenters, can send me a link to an article championing individual rights and common sense against the oppressively idiotic bureaucracy in jolly old England, I would be happy to post them (and sleep better at night). Can’t defend Obama, and I don’t even want to try.
2) Way to hedge your bets.
3) Agree, mostly
4) Luckily, Second Amendment still works, so we’ll be able to fight off the invading hordes.
PS – I also lived on NJ, but never been to Houston.
RPM,
- Houston is not perfect, but wonderful in many ways, especially aesthetically for those who appreciate SW modernity and industrial landscapes.
- This is London is the Daily Mail – small point.
- There are many and frequent stories in the UK press pushing back against all forms of liberalism. The Daily Mail is a prime source of them – eg Melanie Phillips – and there’s plenty of pushback throughout society. It’s a real problem, but no worse than the American form of the disease as implemented in HR, polite society, the msm, victim lawsuits, government service, public schools…..but the absolute right to freedom of speech is a giant blessing for America. Well done the Anglo-Saxons who gave it you.
- My main point to you is that your secondhand stereotypes of the UK are a displacement activity for seeing the terrible mess America is in. You desperately need a Thatcher (her grandson is a Texan, maybe there’s hope), but you’re voting for Pelosi and Obama – dangerous jokes.
- Andrew Roberts’ History of the English Speaking Peoples since 1900 seems excellent on the whole subject.
- America will be able to look the UK in the eye when the term ‘restroom’ is replaced by the fine word ‘bog’.
FYI. Thought youmight want to peruse.
