The election is finally over (thank God). But for those sad to see the campaigns end, try to place this statement:
A Chicken in every pot and a car in every garage.
This quote is attributed to President Herbert Hoover’s 1928 election campaign. A promise of prosperity and good times ahead. Only months after his inaugeration, the country began the Great Depression, during which times cars and chickens were much less plentiful. One should always take a canidate’s campaign promises with a grain of salt.
Due to the present economic situation, there’s been much talk revisiting Hoover, FDR, and the Great Depression and drawing parallels to Bush, Obama, and the Bailout.
All those interested in a facinating book on the Great Depression, what caused it, and what didn’t get us out of it, should read Amity Shlaes’ “The Forgotten Man.” I highly recommend it.
